anyone have any idea's or tricks on how to get a realistic looking explosion cheaply?
The band of brothers team got compressed air and attached a funnel to the machine, buried it in the ground and covered it with dirt and rocks and set it off.. looked awesome [see framegrabs from dvd]

They are called air cannons or air mortars... but we don't fill them with dirt and rocks... we use "Soft" debris... fuller's earth... cork, etc...

Do you know what a Works bomb is?

If not, all you need to do is get "The Works" (a toilet bowl cleaner), some tin foil, and a two liter bottle.

Take the tin foil, and put a whole bunch of tin foil balls in the bottle. Then pour enough Works into the bottle to cover the balls. Screw on the cap then wait a few min, it will blow up. There's loud noise, and some smoke shoots into the air.

Oh and I hear the smoke/gas is flamable so you could have a oil rag somewhere near the gas and you could get a nice big firey explosion, but thats not what you want, is it?

Probably not to safe if you want actors in the shot though...

Did you guys see the soldier who got run over by the tank. He was in my studio a while ago. What a great stunt.

He looked none the worse for the wear.
